Michael Malone Defends Nikola Jokic’s Defensive Prowess Amid Criticism: ‘Best Hands in the NBA
|When considering Denver Nuggets’ center Nikola Jokic, various descriptors may come to mind: offensive savant, passing genius, or perhaps even defensive mastermind. However, some skeptics may question Jokic’s prowess on the defensive end. This doubt is something that particularly frustrates Nuggets head coach Michael Malone.
“What becomes tiresome is people criticizing Nikola’s defense because he doesn’t average three blocks per game,” remarked Malone. “But if you truly appreciate the nuances of basketball and observe the game closely, you’ll notice he possesses some of the best hands in the NBA, without a doubt. … He may not out-athleticize opponents, but he’ll outsmart them. Exceptional anticipation. Great hands. And I believe he’s one of the most underrated defenders in the entire NBA.”
Malone’s perspective holds merit. Despite Jokic’s defensive statistics not necessarily standing out, it would be remiss to discount his abilities on that end of the floor. In a recent comeback victory against the Toronto Raptors, Jokic exhibited an impressive defensive performance. Alongside his 35 points and 12 assists, he secured a remarkable 17 rebounds, along with six steals and two blocks.
Jokic’s defensive contributions were pivotal in sparking the Nuggets’ resurgence. Initially trailing by 22 points and displaying lackluster basketball, the Nuggets rallied after halftime, ultimately clinching a 125-119 victory.
Following victories, Coach Malone typically awards a defensive player of the game chain. Given the Nuggets’ subpar defensive showing in the first half, Malone opted to recognize Jokic and Jamal Murray with a shared “defensive player of the half” accolade for their second-half efforts.
