Shaq’s Humorous Take: Rodman’s Pregame Rituals Make Him a Bigger Superstar
|Dennis Rodman, renowned for his contributions to championship-winning teams like the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Lakers during the latter part of the 1998-99 season. Tasked with bolstering the team’s rebounding and defense alongside Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, Rodman’s time with the Lakers was marked by unconventional behavior that led to a hasty departure. Shaq recently reminisced about Rodman’s peculiar antics during their time as teammates.
During a podcast conversation with Allen Iverson, Shaq highlighted Rodman’s unique approach to team meetings, often arriving late, casually enjoying chicken and rice, and paying minimal attention. Despite his laid-back attitude in meetings, Rodman’s on-court performance was exceptional, providing the team with 25 rebounds per game. Following the game, he would swiftly change, head to the club, and attract the company of stunning women.

Shaq amusingly emphasized the paradox of Rodman’s popularity with women despite his less-than-pleasant aroma, describing him as smelling “like garbage truck water.” Rodman’s high-profile relationships included Carmen Electra, Madonna, Vivica A. Fox, and, according to him, Lakers president Jeanie Buss in 1999. Buss denied any romantic involvement, attributing her association with Rodman to her father’s decision to monitor the enigmatic player’s activities.
Rodman’s time with the Lakers was characterized by eccentric behavior and off-court distractions. Despite his impactful play on the court—averaging 2.1 points and 11.2 rebounds per game—the organization grew weary of his diva-like conduct, partying habits, occasional refusal to play, and tardiness to practices. His brief tenure ended abruptly, with the Lakers waiving him before the regular season concluded after just seven weeks and 23 games.
Although Rodman’s rebounding prowess contributed positively to the Lakers’ performance during that stretch (17-6 record), his off-court antics ultimately outweighed his on-court contributions, leading to a premature exit from the team.
